Unused Mounjaro KwikPens should be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C and must not be frozen. After the first use, the KwikPen may be kept unrefrigerated at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days; it must then be discarded. The 30-day in-use rule is not a general allowance for storing an unopened pen at room temperature.
Before first use
Refrigerate at 2°C–8°C.
Never freeze
Do not use a pen that has been frozen.
After first use
Up to 30 days at no more than 30°C.
Discard rule
Discard after four doses and no later than 30 days after first use.
Storage before first use
The UK Summary of Product Characteristics and patient leaflet state that Mounjaro KwikPen should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C before use. Do not freeze it. Keep it in its original carton to protect it from light, and do not use a pen that has been frozen.
The allowance for up to 30 days at a temperature not above 30°C applies after the pen has first been used. It should not be interpreted as permission for a pharmacy, courier or patient to store an unused pen at room temperature for 30 days. If an unopened pen arrives warm, or the temperature history is uncertain, contact the dispensing pharmacy before using it. Do not guess whether the cold chain has remained acceptable.
Storage after first use
After first use, the KwikPen may be stored unrefrigerated at a temperature not above 30°C for up to 30 days. It must be discarded after 30 days even if medicine remains. It is also designed for four weekly doses; do not try to obtain an additional dose from residual solution.
The pen should be stored with its cap on and without a needle attached. Leaving a needle attached can cause leakage, blockage or air entering the pen. Keep it away from direct heat and sunlight, and never freeze it. If the pen has been exposed to temperatures above the stated limit, contact a pharmacist or prescriber for product-specific advice before use.
Receiving a mail-order delivery
The product information sets the required storage conditions but does not prescribe one universal courier box, liner or temperature-monitor design for every pharmacy. A pharmacy is responsible for arranging appropriate supply and handling. Patients should follow the dispensing pharmacy’s instructions for receipt and promptly refrigerate an unused pen.
If a parcel is delayed, damaged, unexpectedly warm, or arrives without the expected packaging, contact the dispensing pharmacy and explain what happened. Provide delivery times and any temperature indicator information if supplied. Do not assume that a cold pack being partly melted proves the medicine is unsafe, and do not assume that a cool-feeling carton proves the product remained within range. The pharmacy should assess the specific circumstances.
Travel and temporary temperature changes
When travelling, plan how to keep an unused pen within the labelled refrigerated range. Use an insulated medicine carrier appropriate for medicines and prevent direct contact with frozen ice packs, which could freeze the solution. Avoid leaving the pen in a parked car, in direct sunlight or in checked luggage exposed to temperature extremes.
For an in-use pen, the labelled allowance is no more than 30°C for up to 30 days after first use. If the expected environment may exceed 30°C, seek advice from the pharmacist or manufacturer before travel. Do not rely on general advice for other injectable medicines because storage rules differ between products and presentations.
How to recognise a pen that should not be used
Do not use a pen if it has been frozen, is damaged, or the solution is cloudy, discoloured or contains particles. Check the expiry date and the date first used. If you are unsure whether the pen was stored correctly, do not administer it until you have spoken to a pharmacist or prescriber.
Keep the patient leaflet with the medicine. The exact instructions supplied with the product take precedence over general online summaries, particularly if the product presentation or leaflet has changed.
Frequently asked questions

No. Before first use it should be refrigerated at 2°C–8°C. The 30-day allowance applies after first use and only at temperatures not above 30°C.
Can I use a pen that has frozen and thawed?
No. The product information says not to use a pen that has been frozen.
When should I throw away an opened pen?
After four intended weekly doses and no later than 30 days after first use.
What if my delivery arrives warm?
Do not guess. Contact the dispensing pharmacy and provide details of the delivery and packaging so it can assess the product.
